"Empathy separates the warrior from the beast. Understand others. Fight for what matters most."

- Caldesann(src)

Caldesann was one of the founding members of the first order of Horadrim.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

"Wasn't good at naught but war, so I made it my job. Xiansai was divided at the time. Felt right, cleaning up someone else's mess."

During the late 10th/early 11th centuries, Xiansai was in a period of civil strife. Being good at nothing but war (in his own words), Caldesann became a warrior. During the war, his company got sent to Chizu with simple orders: conscript everyone of fighting age, or sack the place. The company was told that the town was a bunch of settled bandits who'd attacked their neighbors, committing roberies with mass conflagrations. So when they marched in and made their demands, Caldesann wasn't surprised when one of the bandits tossed a fire pot at the man right in front of him, killing him via flame before he could even scream.

A fight began as more fire pots came the company's way, setting many men on fire, and sending the horses into panic.

Apparently scarred by his experiences, Caldesann decided that he would never again kill anyone on the battlefield.[1]

The Hunt for the Three[]

"It's funny...I decided I was never gonna kill anybody again on a battlefield. A little foresight would've helped."
Legacy of the Horadrim

Caldesann and his fellow Horadrim bind their essence

Caldesann later became a member of the Horadrim. He was among those who bound their essence into vessels. As the Horadrim could not conquer death, these vessels would store their memories for future Horadrim.[2] Despite his earlier vow to never again kill on the battlefield, Caldesann found plenty of death awaiting him in the Horadrim's crusade against the Prime Evils. However, killing demons was at least more palatable than killing his fellow human beings.[1]

Legacy[]

Caldesann was apparently haunted by his experiences during the Hunt for the Three; enough for him to become a pacifist. However, his pacifism did not extend to demons. Despite his grim experiences, his memory commented that the best things he did were before the Horadrim.[1]

In 1270, under direction of the Memory of Iben Fahd, the Shard-seeker awoke Caldesann's memory, which imparted tales of its progenitor.[1]

In-game[]

Diablo Immortal[]

The Memory of Caldesann appears as an NPC in Diablo Immortal. The NPC features in the Legacy of the Horadrim system, and is obtained once the player inserts the Caldesann's Compassion vessel. Caldesann himself is seen in a flashback during the quest, but is otherwise represented via his memory.

Diablo III[]

Caldesann is referenced in Diablo III via the "Caldesann's Despair" recipe for Kanai's Cube.

Personality and Traits[]

"Saving somebody from suffering's better than compassion for their misfortune."

- Caldesann(src)

Caldesann was a weary, melencholy soul, scarred by his experiences. While he had the ability to use magic, he was wary of it, as using magic to cause others harm prevented its user from "feeling the injury" the same way one would when using their own hands. He commented that "a real warrior's proudest of their retreats."[1]

Caldesann disliked Tal Rasha, calling him "a complete mushroom," but also commented that he was still tough. That everybody was good at something. His disdain similarly applied to the Horadrim as a whole, considering the best things he ever did to be before he joined the Order. While he became a pacifist, he made an exception for demons.[1]

Trivia[]

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • A general motif for Caldesann seems to be melancholia and despair. Diablo Immortal appears to reinforce compassion (see "Caldessan's Compassion"), and its flavor quote emphasizing empathy), while in Diablo III, it references his despair. This arguably relates to his apparent pacifism, and unease in dealing harm.
