The Battleground

The Battleground is a PvP feature in Diablo Immortal. It is available as a standalone event and also serves as the battle format for the Rite of Exile.

Gameplay[]

Battleground is open during the following time windows:

  • 8 a.m. - 10 a.m.
  • 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.
  • 6 p.m. - 12 a.m.

The Battleground is accessible through visiting the Immortal Overlook in Westmarch. Players may opt into an 8v8 contest by speaking with the Battleground Captain. Heroes are chosen to attack or defend by the game.[1]

When calculating the points a player receives from completing a Battleground match, both that player’s individual score and the average score of their team will now be considered.[2]

To enter, the player's character must be at least level 55. Players are rewarded with materials, gold, experience, battle pass progression, and the chance of getting Legendary items.[3] The first 3 matches of the day give increased rewards, but rewards are also awarded for further matches.

Each player has a Resonance rating, which factors into the mode's matchmaking. However, in instances where there are fewer players queuing for a Battleground match, a player may still be paired against players with higher Resonance than their own—this ensures players can reliably find a Battleground match within a reasonable amount of time.[2]

Players who cancel Battleground matches on the Match Found screen will incur a penalty that increases upon each offense.[4] A player’s first infraction will result in a 5-minute queue penalty, meaning they will be unable to queue for a Battleground match for the next 5 minutes. A second infraction results in a 30-minute queue penalty, and a third infraction will make the player unable to queue until the next daily reset occurs.[5]

In the Battleground (including Rite of Exile), damage dealt by players is subject to a 50% reduction.

Bots sometimes get added to Battleground matches. This can happen at Bronze and Silver ranks, but not at Gold or Legend.

Original map[]

Heroes on the attack need to go through three phases: in the first one, slay Guardians; in the second one, escort at least one of the two Zealous Idols; in the third one, destroy the Ancient Heart, the source of their enemy's power. Defenders need to prevent the attacking team from destroying or escorting their objective before the time expires or score 65 kills to thwart the assault.[1]

Convoy map[]

The objectives of the two sides are identical - escort their Zealous Idol to the enemy camp while blocking the enemy from doing the same. Sacred Guardians appear in the center of the map, and provide a buff for the team that kills them.

It is possible to register as a 2-person team in this mode.

Badges[]

In each match, players can earn badges for the following:

  • Longest Zealous Idol escort time
  • Most damage dealt
  • Most healing and shielding provided to allies
  • Most assists
  • Most damage taken
  • Longest Control duration

Each badge is awarded to one player in each team. For the members of the losing team, each badge reduces the number of points lost by one.

Rewards[]

Players can reach certain ranks by accumulating enough points. Reaching a new rank awards the previous rank's reward of Aspirant's Keys and Flowing Shards, which can be earned once per rank per season. Furthermore there is a reward of Reforge Stones and Normal Gems that is awarded at the end of the season, and a weekly reward that is based on the current leaderboard position. It is impossible to lose major ranks (e.g. Gold to Silver or Legend to Gold) by losing points.

After a class change, players must complete 20 matches to be eligible for end-of-season rewards. This is to prevent players from abusing the class imbalance by getting a lot of points on a stronger class and then switching to a weaker class where the same points result in a higher ranking.

History[]

Originally, Battleground seasons were tied to the Cycle of Strife, which has a varying length. In the June 15, 2023 update, the seasons were decoupled and fixed at 10 weeks. The link between Battleground and Deeds of Valor was also removed. The same update introduced a restriction against changing Paragon specializations during battle.

In the July 13, 2023 update, a wall was added in the 2nd phase to prevent defenders from entering the spawn area.

The matchmaking penalties were added in the July 26, 2023 update.

In the August 23, 2023 update, Resonance was added as a factor for matchmaking and the stat compression was reduced.

In the September 6, 2023 update, a 30% damage reduction was added, the score loss at Bronze rank was removed, and changing gear once a match was found was made impossible.

In the September 21, 2023 update, the idol was changed to move faster with more players on it and takes less time to activate. Players with untargetable status were changed to be no longer able to push the idol, and the end of phase 2 was changed to occur immediately after the idol arrives at the end of its lane, as opposed to after the idol finishes its beam animation.

The Reforge Stone rewards on ranking up (as opposed to the end of the season) were introduced in the October 25, 2023 update.

Originally there was a 200% damage modifier against summons in Battleground. In the November 9, 2023 update, the damage to summons was decreased from 200% to 150%. In the January 17, 2024 update, the damage to summons was decreased from 150% to 100%.

Originally only the first 3 matches for the day provided scrap, item and EXP rewards. In the November 22, 2023 update, the rewards were extended to further matches, although only the first 3 matches give the full rewards.

The January 17, 2024 update added diminishing returns for spamming control skills within 6 seconds, with the effectiveness of each successive cast decreasing to 70% of the previous one. It is also no longer possible to change Paragon points while queuing.

In the April 10, 2024 update, compensation points were introduced if players leave the team.

In the April 24, 2024 update, compensation points were introduced if there is too great strength gap between the two sides.

Originally Battleground was closed between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. This was changed in the June 26, 2024 update. The same update made it impossible to lose major ranks (e.g. Gold to Silver or Legend to Gold) by losing points.

Originally the leader board for Battleground displayed the win rates of players. This was removed in the July 10, 2024 update without announcement and therefore without explanation.

In the July 24, 2024 update, the respawn time for defenders was linked to the progress of the Zealous Idols.

In the August 7, 2024 update, the above respawn time was increased as the idols get closer to their goal.

Originally the damage reduction was 30%. In the September 11, 2024 update, this was changed to 40%. In the October 16, 2024 update, it was changed again to 50%.

The October 30, 2024 update reduced the score loss at Gold and Legend ranks.

In the November 13, 2024 update, a cooldown was added to the Request Raid Leadership button.

The December 13, 2024 update added the compensation points for players who earned badges, and made the badges to be given out to each team instead of across the two teams.

The January 8, 2025 update changed assist scoring to account for buffing other players.

The February 12, 2025 update added the Legendary Crest rewards and the requirement to complete 20 matches after a class change.

The Convoy map was introduced in the March 20, 2025 update. At this time, the two maps were active in different times of the day, with the 6 p.m.–9 p.m. slot using the new map, and the other slots using the old map.
