Ancients' Cradle, also called the Cradle of the Ancients,[1] or simply The Cradle[2][3][4] by its natives, is a remote island in the Forgotten Sea inhabited by a reclusive people;[5] the Lilin and Inari, whose lineage can be traced back to Sanctuary's creation.[6]
Lore[]
Ancients' Cradle was originally led by Inarius and Lilith. When they left, it became ruled by the Prevailing Wind, who was elected from a council of elders. Law and order was maintained by the Conservators — who act as judges and assign punishments, and the Sanctifiers — who act as enforcers and enact punishments.[7]
The Inari and Lilin grew crops in farmlands located near settlements. However, they didn't raise animals. Instead careful hunting practices allowed diverse fauna to persist on the island for millennia.[8] In times of hardship, resources are rationed and distributed to everyone.[3]
History[]
Ancients' Cradle was imbued by Lilith and Inarius with the Fire of Life. The Worldstone was stored in Ancients' Cradle before being moved[9] to where Mount Arreat would be formed around it.[10]
The Inari and Lilin remained in conflict, each culture trying to recreate Heaven and Hell on the island respectively, using whatever means were at hand.[3] Famine regularly struck the island.[11]
In the 13th century, after the latest round of famine (and resulting acrimony between both peoples),[11] a Lilin elder named Morwith, along with other Lilin she convinced to follow her absconded with the Pathstone.[3] This event would later be known as the Mutinous Concord.[12] As a result, the Fire of Life became unstable, and swept across the island, causing social breakdown in both cultures, and ravaging the island's flora and fauna, twisting them into new monstrosities.[9]
Later the island was invaded by the Cult of Terror, who sought a means to purify a Worldstone shard. Shortly later, an exiled Inari accompanied by an outsider arrived in pursuit of the cult.[13] The Cult ravaged the land capturing the natives to be interrogated and or sacrificed.[3] They also attempted to commune with the Fire of Life directly [2] or using a captured islander as a proxy,[4] but were rejected on both occasions.
The cult then tried to harvest the components of Life's Fire separately. They were able to harvest some of the Mother's Legacy but were stopped by Sacred Guardian on their way to the Father's Legacy. The guardians were easily defeated with a blast of Mother's Legacy which corrupted them, and began to corrupt Shieldholm. Fortunately, the cult was unable to breach the barrier around Inarius's Shrine.[14]
