The Ancient Tunnels apparently once served as a sewer for the lost city; the dungeon architecture is identical to the sewer under Lut Gholein. Random Unique monsters spawn toward the bottom, and your reward is a sparkling treasure chest of possible high-ticket items.
Since patch 1.10, The Ancient Tunnels have also become a popular MF location, since it is one of the few area level 85 zones, and contains no cold immunes on Hell difficulty.
