The Abyssal Verge
The Abyssal Verge is a location in the Burning Hells.
Lore[]
The Abyssal Verge is located in Hell. A dark shadow referred to as "Terror Incarnate" covers the area that is lethal to any mortal it covers, and many adventurers have fallen prey to its encircling grasp. Mortals have seen faces within the watery shadows of the Terror, or perhaps, this is paranoia creeping into their minds.[1]
C. 1273, as Diablo's manifestation in Sanctuary drew near,[1] Rayek began having nightmares of various locations—twisted and burning red like they were being swallowed by the Hells. On one such dream,he found himself in a warped Wortham in front of a portal to the Abyssal Verge. He sent a letter to summon the Shard-seeker, while he went to Wortham to investigate. When the Shard-seeker arrived, they volunteered to enter the portal and purge the evil within. They succeeded and returned with a Terrorwrought Shard. After studying the shard, Rayek (with Charsi's help[2]) built a steady portal to the Abyssal Verge in the basement of Cain's Workshop in Westmarch.[3]
In 1336, the Wanderer fought their way through the Verge to reach the Well of Hatred and defeat the Fell Council.[4]
Gameplay[]
Diablo Immortal[]
The Abyssal Verge appears as an event in Diablo Immortal, as part of the Nightmare Manifest update. The event can be entered from Westmarch via a portal next to Rayek. The difficulty must be Hell II or higher.
The portal leads to a map is a variation of one of the overworld maps (such as Ashwold Cemetery, Frozen Tundra or Mount Zavain. The map chosen remains the same for a certain amount of time, after which it rotates to a different map. After entering the portal, the player appears at a random spawn location along the edge of the map. There is a 30 second countdown for the player to review the map and plan their escape, which can be skipped by clicking on the "Go" button. The Terror Incarnate is a circular field that keeps expanding in diameter, starting near the spawn location and eventually covering the entire map. The player takes damage while inside the circle and gets booted out if staying within it for 15 seconds in a row. After a certain time, the Shade of Destruction appears in the area of the map that is last to be covered by the darkness. Killing this boss results in a victory, awarding an Abyssal Essence.
While in the Abyssal Verge, all monsters are marked on the map. A regular monster kill is worth 1 point, an Elite monster is worth 10 points, a Rare Elite is worth 50 points, an Ancient Elite is worth 100 points, and the boss is worth 300 points. The reward increases for every 250 points.
Normal Gems can be obtained from Abyssal Verge depending on the score. Every 500 points rewards one bound and one unbound normal gem. The maximum is 4 pairs of gems for a score of 2000. A player can obtain a maximum of 63 bound and 63 unbound Normal Gems per week from Hidden Lairs, Abyssal Verge and Erebban.
History[]
In the June 26, 2024 update, the boss spawn was made earlier.
In the July 10, 2024 update, the mob chase distance was increased and their health was decreased.
The Normal Gem rewards were added in the August 7, 2024 update. At the same time, a guaranteed Abyssal Essence drop was added for a score of 1,000 or higher.
The update on September 11, 2024 added a boss location marker to the "Plan your Escape" screen, as well as the drops of Normal Gems in a full party.

The Abyssal Verge will appear as a zone in Diablo IV, as part of the Infernal Hordes gameplay mode.
Trivia[]
- There is circumstancial evidence as to the location of the Abyssal Verge. In Diablo Immortal, it is implied that the Verge is located in the Realm of Terror, given its theme, the link to Diablo, and how its aesthetic is similar to its appearance in Diablo III. In Diablo IV however, the Verge is implied to be in the Realm of Hatred, as the player fights the Fell Council at the Well of Hatred, both of which are linked to Mephisto.
- The transcript of the quest "Abyssal Verges" hints that the Abyssal Verge may not be a single location, but actually temporary realms that form whenever the Burning Hells begin to encroach upon Sanctuary.
